National Institute Of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Shillong

National Institute of fashion technology (NIFT) Shillong, a new entrant in the consortium of the NIFTs, was established in 2008. There are only 16 NIFTs in India, NIFT Shillong being one of them is a leader in the fashion education industry in the state of Meghalaya. Currently, the institute offers two four year UG programs- Fashion Design and Accessory design and one two year PG program- Master of Fashion Management. It is an autonomous institute and it is approved by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. NIFT Shillong is the first premier fashion institute in North East India. It was ranked 11th among all the participating institutes by the survey conducted by The Week in 2019.

The institute offers Bachelor of Design in two different specializations i.e. Fashion Design and Accessory Design and it also offers one PG program- Master of Fashion Management. Below are more details on the same.

NIFT Shillong Admission

To take part in the admission process of NIFT Shillong the students must fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria and also appear in the NIFT Entrance exam. The candidates with higher scores will be given preference. Below are the details regarding the admission process.

To take admission in the B.Des course, the candidates will have to fill the form for the entrance examination. The entrance examination for B.Des is three-tiered. The candidates will have to appear in a Creative Ability Test (CAT) and a General Ability Test (GAT). The last stage will be a Situation test, candidates who pass all these three tiers will be eligible to take admission in the esteemed institute.

Admission to the MFM course is a two-tiered process. The candidates will have to appear in a General Ability Test (GAT) followed by Group Discussion/ Personal Interview.

NIFT Shillong Placements

Every year, a centralized placement drive is organized for all the NIFTs. There are two options for the students to opt i.e. Pre Placement Offers (PPOs) or On-Campus Placements (OCPs). PPOs are made when students undergo any training/ internship in any organization as part of their course curriculum. 

The highest package offered to the students in the previous year was INR 5 LPA whereas the average package was INR 3.88 LPA. Some prominent recruiters in the placement drive for the year 2019 were Amazon, Raymonds, Reliance, Aditya Birla Nuvo, Snapdeal, ITC, TVS Motors, VIP, Titan, Future Groups, and many more.

NIFT Shillong Scholarship

The institute has a scheme called “SARTHAK’ under which it offers financial assistance to the needy students based on their family income. There are also different awards and scholarship programs from the corporate sector in partnership with the institute. Companies like ITC, Homeshop 18 also provide scholarships & awards to the meritorious students. There is also a scheme named “UDAAN” which is to provide assistance to foreign students.

NIFT Shillong Facilities

NIFT Shillong is one of the premier institutes of Fashion Technology in India, though it is a new entrant it is making great progress with each passing year. Ample amount of facilities are provided to the students on the NIFT Shillong campus. Some of them are mentioned below.

• Library: The institute has a library consisting of 3300 books, 12 magazines subscribed, 11 newspapers, 60 forecasts, and many other e-resources.
• Design Studio: The institute has a design studio so that students can perfect their creative skills with ease.
• Hostels: The fashion institute offers hostel facilities for both girls as well as boys.  
• Apart from these, the institute campus is WiFi connected, it also has a convenient store.
